Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our tests on floors that are bare They're also particularly adept in removing pet hair. However, they have some flaws that prevent them from being our top choice. For instance, the Q5's navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology and is therefore prone to getting hung up on shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate tightly packed rooms very efficiently in our tests. Also, it doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of a room.
Still, it's very good for those who want to save money on a Roomba from iRobot and have a bare-floored home or office. It's also very quiet and you can use it while you're at work or school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming available in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle, however. If you're required to clean the mopping pad, it can be changed for an awe-inspiring one in a matter of just a few seconds.

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that scored 100% in our tests due to a mix of high-tech sensors that include a camera, structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.
As with other iRobot models, the X40 is easy to use, offering an intuitive mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. It also has a front-mounted camera to detect hazards in real-time, although this wasn't quite 100% foolproof during our tests and was occasionally confused by power cords or other obstructions.
Its vacuum has a high suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vacuum works and also alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home according to the amount of dirt they tend to be.
For larger homes, it's worth opting for one with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a specific area of your home via the app or voice commands.
